Premium Backcountry Experience
Updated for the 2025/2026 winter season, we are excited to be offering a diverse and premium backcountry touring experience – Champion Bowl IV. A full 4 days of diverse backcountry skiing and riding in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains and in the Red Mountain Pass corridor. If you’ve never experienced backcountry touring in the San Juans and on Red Mountain Pass, you’re missing out. Impeccable access to Colorado’s finest backcountry touring terrain truly sets the area apart. For skiers that join us for the full 4-day experience, we offer the additional options available to us in the 550 Corridor. Objectives such as Anvil Mountain, Bear Mountain, the Battleship, and other classic tours/descents. As the name implies, we also intend to summit Red 3 for a descent of the north facing classic run – Champion Bowl.
This trip includes 3 nights of lodging and premium meals (Full American Breakfast, Trail Lunch, Dinner, Dessert, & Apps) at The Red Mountain Alpine Lodge – the area’s newest and most luxurious backcountry ski lodge, plus use of the latest technology in avalanche safety gear. The inclusions on this program simplify the planning for you and insure that you’re experiencing the best of what the Ouray area has to offer in terms of both local amenities and unmatched access to backcountry skiing.

Champion Bowl IV Itinerary
DAY 0
Fly into Montrose or Grand Junction, Colorado (transportation shuttle to Ouray can be arranged from Montrose with Tellurides) and meet at SJMG office at 1600 for trip intro and finalize paperwork. If necessary for your trip you can rent touring skis and boots on this day. Stay in a local hotel such as the The Western Hotel in Ouray, CO.
DAY 1
The group will meet in the morning at our office in Ouray to insure that everyone is prepared to head up Red Mountain Pass with all of their gear. A short tour into the Red Mountain Alpine Lodge allows us to drop additional gear we won’t need for our day of skiing. After our gear is set aside, the group will gather up to head out into the Red Mountain Pass backcountry around the lodge to familiarize ourselves with the terrain and take a few runs. Along the way we’ll cover some standard backcountry safety protocols. The day usually ends with one last run around 3:30 – 4:00 pm and then we are back at the lodge enjoying soup and cocktails! Lodging provided at the Red Mountain Alpine Lodge.
DAY 2
Staying at a lodge in the area will offer us even better access to backcountry skiing objectives and enhance opportunities to experience a wider variety of terrain. Our second day in the backcountry will be spent touring from the lodge for a full day, hitting a number of powder runs and descents along the way. Our goal is about 3500′ – 4000′ feet of skiing on this day, though conditions, weather, and other factors may shorten or lengthen this day. Many options exist for touring on this day. Lodging provided at the Red Mountain Alpine Lodge.
DAY 3
Backcountry skiing in the Red Mountain Pass area. After a hearty breakfast we’ll click in and tour the backcountry terrain around the hut in the Red Mountain Pass area. Venues such as Red Mountain #3, Commodore Basin, McMillan Peak, and more offer excellent touring and descent options. We’ll also have the option to stop in and have lunch at the private Refugio Monte Rosa. Lodging provided at the Red Mountain Alpine Lodge.
DAY 4
On the last day of our trip you have the option to do more ski touring in the Red Mountain Pass area with your SJMG guide. Many options exist in the vast terrain in this venue. Return to Ouray. Depart or stay and additional night in Ouray and fly out the next morning. Many participants choose to schedule a late afternoon or early evening departure from Montrose. Alternatively you can stay another night in Ouray and depart the following day.

Who is the Champion Bowl IV intended for?
The Champion Bowl IV is intended for intermediate to experienced backcountry skiers looking for a multi-day hut-based ski touring trip. Guests will have the best time if they are capable of ski touring for several hours a day at altitude.
Can children join the Champion Bowl IV?
Because guests on the Champion Bowl IV travels through consequential terrain, we require all participants to be able to perform a beacon rescue. Guests also need to have backcountry ski touring fitness. Please contact the office if you think minors in your family would be able to participate.
How many people will be on the trip with me?
The Champion Bowl IV is guided at a 4:1 ratio with a maximum group size of 8 skiers and 2 guides. Let the office know your intended group size so we can reserve guides to accommodate it.
When will I be back in town?
You will return to Ouray around 4:00 PM on the 4th day.
Do I have to bring everything on the Equipment list?
Yes, the equipment list is designed to be comprehensive for a multi-night stay with varied weather/objective possibilities.
Does San Juan Mountain Guides provide lunch?
The Red Mountain Alpine Lodge will provide breakfast and dinner. There will be an opportunity for you to make something simple for lunch or pack a snack at the lodge before heading out. If you have specific lunch needs, please plan on bringing your own lunch or snacks.
I have my own equipment, can I use it?
Yes! If you have your own gear, you are most welcome to use it! Please bring it into the office so that your guide can confirm it will be safe for backcountry travel.
What will the weather be like on Red Mountain Pass?
The temperature averages 30 to 35 degrees with highs above 40 and lows below 0. We recommend bringing layers you can shed while touring and put back on transitioning or for the descents. Don’t forget sun protection! As always, participants should be prepared for a wide variety of winter weather conditions from snowstorms to bluebird skies!
OURAY, COLORADO: GETTING HERE
Ouray is located in the SW corner of Colorado, approximately 30 minutes south of Montrose. Known as “The Switzerland of America”, the town of Ouray is a vibrant outdoor oriented community. All local businesses are very friendly to the ice climbers who flock each winter to climb in the Ouray Ice Park and surrounding areas.
The best option for flying to the area is to fly into Montrose, CO. Many airline options exist, and most connections originate from Denver, CO, however, many airlines now offer direct flights into Montrose – especially during the summer and winter months.
It is also possible to fly into Grand Junction, Durango, Telluride, or Denver CO. It may be necessary to rent a car and drive to Ouray if you’d like to fly into one of these airports.
Below are some approximate driving times if you’d like to drive to Ouray. If you plan on renting a car, please consider the winter weather when selecting your vehicle and at a minimum choose something that offers either front wheel or all-wheel drive.

- Denver, CO: 5.5 hours
